What is the Ketogenic Diet and How Does It Work?

The ketogenic diet, often referred to as the keto diet, is a high-fat, low-carbohydrate eating plan designed to shift the body’s metabolism from using glucose (sugar) as the primary energy source to using fat. Under normal circumstances, the body relies on glucose from carbohydrates as its main fuel. However, by significantly reducing carbohydrate intake in a ketogenic diet, glucose levels drop, and the body enters a metabolic state called ketosis. In ketosis, the liver produces ketones, which are by-products of fat breakdown. These ketones serve as an alternative fuel for the brain and other body tissues.







What Foods are Included and Excluded in the Ketogenic Diet?

The keto diet typically involves consuming large amounts of healthy fats, such as olive oil, coconut oil, butter, avocado, nuts, fatty fish, and moderate amounts of protein. Carbohydrates, on the other hand, are limited to a very small amount—typically less than 50 grams per day. Foods that are typically restricted on the keto diet include bread, rice, pasta, potatoes, sugar, and other carbohydrate-rich foods.

What are the Benefits and Potential Side Effects of the Ketogenic Diet?

The benefits of the ketogenic diet include weight loss, improved insulin sensitivity, better blood sugar control, and potential improvements in cardiovascular health.
